Lab defense: dissecting Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex infecting rice in Brazil

The second thesis defense of the year was presented by Caroline Ávila (on the right at the photo), one of the students involved in the Fusarium rice project who focused her work on the diversity of the Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex infecting rice in Brazil.

Fusarium rice project workshop at UFLA

From August 25 and 26 we had our third one-day Fusarium rice project workshop at Lavras, MG. These workshops occur every six months, alternating between UFV and UFLA, and aim at updating and planning research activities, especially targeting planning of activities of the doctoral and MSc research.

Spatial patterns of brown spot lesions in rice leaves

Our recent article demonstrates the combined use of digital analysis and various spatial pattern techniques to study lesion distribution at the leaf scale. The study was conducted by my former M.Sc. student, André Aguiar Schwanck, currently a doctorate student at Toulouse France.

Start-up workshop: Fusarium and mycotoxins in rice

Earlier this year we started a 3-year research project entitled “Biology, toxigenicity and pathogenicity of Fusarium species and occurrence of mycotoxins in rice grains”. We received a CNPq research grant (Universal 2014) to conduct this inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary project in collaboration with three other Universities (Universidade Federal de Lavras - UFLA, Universidade Federal de Rio Grande - FURG and Universidade Estadual de Maringá - UEM) and two rice research institutes (Embrapa Arroz e Feijão and Epagri Itajaí Experimental Station).

Project report and publications: seed-borne inoculum for rice brown spot

Finally, after two years we ended a multi-institutional project entitled “Epidemiological basis for risk management and tolerance thresholds of Bipolaris oryzae in rice produced in Rio Grande do Sul state”, which was funded by a specific call for studying the impact of seed-borne pathogens (CNPq Edital 422009), we got a few papers published in both scientific journals and technical magazines.
